Background:

(As in most mangas with an anime, the storyline slightly differs. I'm choosing to go with the manga version here. Also, I chose to focus on his family history more than his story in the manga, if only because I find his family history more important.)

The Asakura family is a well-known family in Izumo, Japan that has been dealing with the supernatural for more than a thousand years. The family history could be traced back to Asakura Hao, a well known shaman that eventually gave in to his power and started a path towards destruction. To make penance with the mistake of giving birth to Hao, the Asakura family has since then swore to destroy Hao.

Yoh was born into the family on May 12th, 1985, as part of a set of twins. Before his birth, his grandfather predicted that Hao, with the abilities he has gained in his previous lives, will be born into their family again as a cycle after a thousand years. Not knowing which twin would turn out to be Hao, his grandfather attempted to murder both of them, but failed as Hao was born first. Fortunately, the second child still lived, as was thus named Yoh.

As a shaman, Yoh has the abilities to see spirits and use their powers as his own. He can also summon smaller spirits and use them to protect himself. As the youngest heir of the Asakura family, Yoh carries the burden of defeating Hao. But as a carefree child, Yoh prefers staring into nature instead of training his shamanic abilities. Even so, everyone in Izumo knows him as the 'ghost child', calling on their fear of the spiritual because of all the technology nowadays.

At the age of ten, his family decides to pair him up with an itako (a Japanese spiritual medium) named Anna, to ensure the family bloodline and also to try to push Yoh harder in his shaman training. Before his visit to Kyouyama, he encounters the first spirit he truly befriends, a cat spirit named Matamune. In order to save Anna, Yoh awakens a part of his powers while Matamune sacrifices himself to perform one last attack. During the event, Yoh promises Matamune that he would gain power enough to summon him once again with a bear-claw necklace, not knowing that Matamune's previous summoner is none other than Asakura Hao. Before returning home, Yoh also promises Anna that he would become the Shaman King, finally finding a reason to continue his training.

From them on, though he still doesn't like to train, he's never stopped to sharpen his skills. As he turns thirteen, he decides to move on to a bigger city that more powerful spirits would populate, namely Toyko. There he befriends his first human pal Oyamada Manta, heir to the Oyamada Incorporation. At the same time, he also gains his main spirit, a 600 year old Samurai named Amidamaru that will accompany him on all of his later journeys. He also met his first rival and soon friend, a headstrong Chinese that goes by Tao Ren. Learning about Yoh's complexities with the Tao family, Anna later moves to Toyko to support him with her Hell-like training sessions.

As a comet rushes around the Earth twice, the Shaman Fight begun. Soon Yoh plunges into the task of winning nearly impossible battles against other shamans from around the globe. While fighting Silva from the Pachi Tribe, Yoh learns the Over Soul, an ability that allows him to solidify spirits into the real world. While Yoh struggles to sustain his easy-going philosophy, a battle against Faust VIII made him realize that what he already has wouldn't be enough for him to win. Going back to Izumo for help, he goes through a death-like expierence in a tunnel that taught him the importance of being able to maintain oneself. This lesson was well learnt, for he commonly recalls upon this when being confronted with difficulties.

Along with his friends Ryu, Horohoro, Tao Ren, and later even Faust VIII and another shaman known as Chocolove, they challenge the Shaman Fight with strong determination in their hearts. When the tournament requires the participants to form three member teams, he grouped up with Ryu and Faust VIII as the Funbari Hotspring Team (a name Anna came up with to commercialize the Funbari Hotspring).

After everyone found out that defeating Hao would be impossible, Yoh decides to chose another path, though it was never made clear what he intended to do. He was also chosen as one of the five legendary warriors that would each control a elemental spirit, and he went as far as to train in Hell in order to gain more power.

Personality:

The easiest way to describe Yoh would be that he's incredibly lazy. He doesn't like to do much and he can stare into nothingness for hours on end without moving. To avoid interacting with his classmates, he chose to lie just so no one would bother him. Yoh's life ambition is to be able to live an easy life, which was his first reason in entering the Shaman Fight.

But while he's not all that hard to get to know, it's partically impossible to pry information out of him. He keeps to himself and rarely offers his own story, unless absolutely required. This could be traced back to his childhood, when he was always alone because of his family's standings in his hometown. Though he does not show his loneliness, it's clear that he communicates with shamans far better than he does with normal humans.

During a trip to America, his group of friends acknowledged him as the leader of their group, the first time anyone affirms his leadership qualities. Yoh proves this with his quick decisions in and out of battle, and though he's not the smartest person out there he seems to be able to make the right decisions whenever needed. Because of how the Shaman Fight is set, most of his friends are also Yoh's rivals - yet when it comes to group meetings, it's common that they look to Yoh for a mutual agreement.

Due to a lack of friends in his childhood, Yoh cherishs any form of friendship he can get. He goes by the motto that those who can see spirits would never be bad, therefore has been known to count in his enemies as someone he has to connect with and protect.

But despite his peaceful outward appearance, his friends has noticed something odd about him. Though he does get angry, the emotion seems to slide off him after a while. Even when a friend of his dies, he never loses his calm and doesn't not feel contempt towards the murderer. While he talks about a general love of mankind, it's unknown if he truly feels love. This may or may not be because of Hao, as they're twins and Hao has stated before that Yoh is his other half. However, this has not been confirmed by anyone, and the most we can conclude out of this is that Yoh simply does not want to feel tied down by his emotions.

His favorite food is curry udon.
